An element that adds the final touch to a nautical holiday in Croatia, fulfills personal expectations, and turns the journey into an unforgettable experience.
If in our last blog we described the main reasons for renting boats in Croatia—mentioning primarily the vast sea expanses, the highly indented coastline, excellent marinas, and pristine nature—now we highlight another key element that completes the expectations of sailors and sea lovers: Mediterranean cuisine.
Mediterranean cuisine is renowned for being exceptionally healthy, promoting well-being, and even extending life. Its benefits are acknowledged by both doctors and nutritionists. The foundation consists of simple yet incredibly delicious dishes made from natural and healthy ingredients.
The Mediterranean diet is based primarily on the consumption of plant-based foods, such as vegetables (eggplant, zucchini, peppers, artichokes, tomatoes, garlic, Swiss chard), grains (wheat, rice, spelt, corn, barley), legumes (chickpeas, peas, beans), fruits (grapes, figs, peaches, apricots, lemons, oranges, kiwi), fresh herbs (basil, thyme, rosemary, marjoram), olive oil, and red wine.
Vegetables and Fruits
Different types of vegetables are a treasure trove of vitamins, minerals, and fibers, while legumes contain a high amount of protein. Fruits are also an important source of vitamins and minerals and are often included in the preparation of various main courses and desserts.
Olive Oil
Olive oil has been the foundation of Mediterranean cuisine since ancient times. Due to its high content of unsaturated fatty acids (up to 80%), it is very beneficial for the heart and blood vessels.
Fish and Seafood
The most important and often primary ingredient in the Mediterranean diet for vacationers is fish and seafood, most commonly sea bream, sea bass, and octopus. However, one should not overlook the highly nutritious oily fish such as sardines, tuna, mackerel, and swordfish. Fish is rich in iodine, essential for proper thyroid function, protein for overall body health, and omega-3 fatty acids that protect the heart and blood vessels.
Red Wine
Red wine helps regulate cholesterol levels in the diet, but it should be consumed in moderation with every main meal.
Limited Consumption: Meat, Eggs, and Dairy Products
Meat and meat products are consumed in moderation, mainly lamb and poultry. Similarly, eggs, cheese, and dairy products are not frequently found in Mediterranean cuisine, though they are not entirely absent.
Nautical tourists are among the most valued guests in Croatia, and great efforts are made to ensure their comfort. In addition to numerous restaurants and taverns in more urban areas, especially near marinas, the greatest pleasure for true sea lovers is discovering a hidden tavern in a remote location, where one can still experience an authentic old fishing evening.
