Due to its characteristics, it has several advantages over traditional (monohull) sailboats. Here are some of the key ones.

The first thing that comes to mind is – comfort! Catamarans are more stable than monohulls, allowing the crew a more comfortable life, better relaxation, improved sleep with fewer worries, and more time for culinary delights and entertainment.

They are considerably wider, enabling easier movement between the salon and cockpit, giving the crew more freedom while sailing, motoring, or anchoring. Their stability makes sailing smoother, and cooking easier and more enjoyable, providing a direct view of the outside world. Also, due to the twin hulls, they offer much greater privacy as the living spaces are more separated.

Spaciousness

When it comes to space, catamarans are the clear winners compared to monohulls. They provide spacious cabins with king-size beds, private bathrooms, an incredible living area with panoramic views, large aft and additional forward cockpits.

Safety

The debate over the safety of monohulls versus catamarans is ongoing. No one can claim that monohulls are unsafe, but catamarans are undoubtedly more stable, with less rocking at sea, providing a more pleasant experience.

Catamarans are also more responsive due to less load, typically equipped with two diesel engines and a generator. If one fails, the other can continue the journey, and docking is easier. Modern catamarans can turn 360 degrees on their axis and anchor in shallow waters, which monohulls cannot do.

Speed

Sailing speed depends on choice and conditions. Since catamarans do not have a heavy keel, they are generally faster than monohulls of the same length. Although they are not ideal for upwind sailing, they excel in downwind conditions.

Draft

Most catamarans have a shallow draft, allowing anchoring closer to the shore. This provides better protection from wind and a shorter dinghy ride to the shore.

Costs

Despite their many advantages, the only downside to catamarans is that mooring fees are higher compared to monohulls. However, the difference is only about 50%, not proportional to their space.

Interested?! Want to try a catamaran?
