Nautical Movie Worth Watching: The Mercy

“The Mercy” is a film about amateur sailor Donald Crowhurst, who participated in the first Golden Globe Race in 1968, a race where sailors were to circumnavigate the world solo, without external assistance and without stopping for the first time in history.

The race was sponsored in 1968 by the London newspaper Sunday Times. Donald Crowhurst took part in the race to become the first sailor in the world to sail solo around the world. Despite the fact that this was an extraordinary challenge, carefully undertaken even by the most experienced sailors, Donald decided to try it. In order to be faster than others, he decided to participate in the race with a 35-foot-long trimaran, which he built himself. Despite his inexperience, he managed to secure a sponsor and a press agent to handle publicity.

He embarked on his journey around the world unprepared. The catamaran he built was not suitable for such an exceptional feat. He faced difficulties with it even before departure.

You can watch the movie, which was made to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Golden Globe Race, to see how his sailing journey unfolded with all its challenges and deceptions.
