5 Reasons to Rent a Boat in Croatia

Slovenians are a maritime nation. We love the sea. We are especially fond of the Adriatic, which feels like home and which we know so well. But it’s not just our small Slovenian stretch of coastline; the real challenge for all sailors, especially those who love sailing, lies in the Croatian coast. Vast maritime expanses, unspoiled wild nature—a true nautical paradise for all seafarers. Let’s take a look at some key facts.

5835 km of coastline

Croatia is the most popular holiday destination for Slovenians year after year. No wonder, considering that it is geographically close, communication with the locals is easy (let’s leave politics aside!), and it offers a perfect choice for every holidaymaker, especially for sailors, with its 5835 kilometers of coastline, including islands.

1246 islands

Croatia is home to 698 islands, 389 islets, 78 reefs, and 81 rocks, making Croatian islands the most numerous in the Adriatic Sea and the second most numerous in the Mediterranean (after Greece).

Some have been inhabited since the time of Ancient Greece. For example, Hvar was settled between 3500 and 2500 BC. Today, only 48 of the inhabited islands have at least one permanent resident.

51 marinas

Along the Croatian coast, from Umag to Cavtat, there are a total of 51 marinas. 21 of them belong to the ACI group, while the others operate independently or within hotel and tourism companies. Almost all marinas are open year-round and offer standard nautical services, while some also provide additional administrative services (border police, customs, port authority).

2715 hours of sunshine

In these cold, damp days, the mere thought of a dry, warm, and long summer in Dalmatia—where up to 2715 hours of sunshine are recorded annually—can bring some warmth.

10% protected nature

The untouched nature of Croatia’s national and nature parks covers nearly 10% of the country’s territory. The diversity of its plant and animal life is bound to leave no one indifferent.

Croatia is home to 8 national parks: Brijuni, Kornati, Krka Waterfalls, Mljet, Paklenica, Plitvice Lakes, Risnjak, and Northern Velebit, as well as 11 nature parks, six of which are coastal: Učka, Telašćica – Dugi Otok, Vransko Lake, Biokovo, Velebit, and Lastovo Island.
