What to consider when renting a sailboat?

Even though we are still in the middle of winter, it’s a good idea to start thinking about renting a boat now. The selection is broader, and the prices are more favorable.

But what to rent, which boat to choose, and how to decide on the right one to fully meet your sailing expectations?

There are many types, brands, and models of boats. With the right choice, it is possible to satisfy all desires. However, to make the right decision, we must first answer a few questions and set priorities when renting.

How many crew members will there be?

The number of crew members determines the size of the boat. Most commonly, 2, 3, 4, or 5-cabin sailboats are rented. A cabin typically accommodates two people, while one or two additional beds can be arranged in the saloon.

Are we going sailing with friends, colleagues, or family with children?

When sailing with family, especially with children, comfort and safety come first. In this case, a comfortable “cruiser” should be rented instead of a racing sailboat. It may be a bit slower, but it offers plenty of space and comfort. A bimini (shade canopy) and a safety net for the youngest should not be overlooked.

With friends or colleagues, we can be bolder and choose a more demanding, fast sailboat with excellent sailing capabilities or opt for comfort if we prefer a more relaxed sailing experience.

How experienced are we in sailing? Do we need an experienced skipper?

If sailing for the first time and no experienced sailor is in the crew, it’s better to hire a skipper and avoid any concerns.

What budget do we have available?

Although last-minute deals can be found throughout the year, early boat rentals usually offer the best prices and a wide selection of boats.
